Hong Kong Chief Executive C Y Leung said Friday that he opposes illicit means, such as the Occupy Central plan, to achieve universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017."Hong Kong is a law-abiding society and we have enough open channels for different views to be expressed," Leung said after participating in a signature campaign organized by the Alliance for Peace and Democracy.More than 120,000 people in Hong Kong till now have signed up to join a planned march against the Occupy Central campaign and more are expected to do so in the run-up to the demonstration on Sunday, according to the Alliance for Peace and Democracy. The march is supposed to mark an end to a month-long signature campaign.Leung said, as a member of the Hong Kong community, he wants to encourage universal suffrage but opposes any illegal means to gain it.Leung said that it will be an historic move if Hong Kong achieves the goal of universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017, and it must be done in accordance with the Basic Law and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress decisions. He stressed that the Hong Kong government will promote communication between different sectors, including Hong Kong legislators and the Chinese central government.A meeting between Legislative Council members and central government officials next week in Shenzhen will help both sides work together towards the implementation of universal suffrage, Leung added.
