Slovenia's honey output falls sharply

Slovenian beekeepers are bracing for "the worst honey harvest in almost half a century" due to persistent rainy and unseasonably cold weather, the Beekeepers' Association said on Thursday.Honey production this year has only reached about 20 percent of the average annual harvest, Bostjan Noc, chief of the association, told reporters.Slovenian beekeepers usually harvest around 2000 tonnes of honey. While many bee farms have poor honey harvest, some areas had not had any honey at all this year. What is worse, the weather conditions have not even allowed for the development of bees."The bees have been on sugar the whole year, which means they won't be fit enough to survive the winter," Noc said, adding that Slovenian beekeepers have turned to the government for help.Apiculture has long been a traditional activity in Slovenia, which dates back to early 18th century.Currently, there are some 8,000 beekeepers tending about 150, 000 hives in Slovenia, according to Noc.
