"I don't have an obsession with car plates, nor did I work in a related industry. I can't even drive. But license plate auctions are a major issue related to residents' livelihoods and people have to pay attention."A local septuagenarian surnamed Huang, recently sent three letters to the Shanghai Morning Post concerning possible adjustments to license plate auctions held in Shanghai. For example, to keep the pool of participating bidders from growing too large, Huang argued that only people who have already bought new cars should be allowed to take part in the auctions. Using such criteria, he estimates that only 50,000 to 60,000 "true" bidders took part in August's auction, even though more than 121,000 bidders actually participated. Huang also claimed that current auction policies are being taken advantage of by speculators and profiteers who want to resell scarce Shanghai license plates.
