Trade expo kicks off in Cambodian capital






The 4th edition of an international garment and industrial machinery exhibition kicked off here on Friday, mainly aiming to boost garment and footwear sector, which is accounted for about 80 percent of Cambodia's total exports, officials said.The annual event brought together 260 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions, Judy Wang, president of Yorkers Trade and Marketing Service of Hong Kong, which organized the fair in collaboration with the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC), said at the opening of the four-day exhibition."It will be a platform for manufacturers, buyers, traders, distributors, and government officials to meet and exchange ideas on the development of industrials," she said."This is also an opportunity for manufacturers to promote their products and for consumers to upgrade their machinery to increase production capacity."A variety of industrial machinery for the production of textile and garment, footwear, plastics and rubber, printing and packaging are displayed at the event.Chhuon Dara, Commerce Ministry Secretary of State, said industrials are deemed to be main pillars of the Cambodian economic development, particularly garment and footwear industries."This trade event will contribute to promoting the industrial development and foreign investment in Cambodia," he said.GMAC's deputy president John Cha Peng Koi said every year, more than 100 new garment and footwear factories have been opened in Cambodia.Currently, garment and footwear sector comprises 960 factories with some 620,000 workers, according to the Ministry of Labor. It earned nearly three billion US dollars from exports in the first six months of 2014, accounting for an estimated 80 percent of the country's total exports.
