Bolivian President Evo Morales met Chinese Ambassador Li Dong here Thursday to assess bilateral cooperation, with an eye to boosting joint projects.The Chinese envoy described their talks as "positive," saying they were a sign of strengthening ties between the two countries.The topics included donations, economic aid and sale of four Chinese-made Modern Ark-60 airplanes, among others.Li also thanked Morales for sending condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping over the death and destruction caused by a powerful earthquake Sunday in China's southwest Yunnan province.The death toll from the 6.5-magnitude quake reached 615 on Thursday, with more than 3,000 injured."We appreciate the message that President Morales sent to the Chinese president regarding the earthquake in China. It demonstrates the cordiality and solidarity that exists between our two peoples," said Li.The ambassador also congratulated Bolivia on the 189th anniversary of its independence on Aug. 6."We want to congratulate the Bolivian people for the development and works under the leadership of President Evo Morales," said Li.In May, China became Bolivia's biggest bilateral loan provider, with 468.5 million US dollars, or 59 percent of the country's total bilateral foreign debt, according to the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB).In recent years, Bolivia and China have reached agreements that have led China to become one of the South American country's most significant strategic partners in various projects and cooperation programs, economist Marco Luis Ballivian told Xinhua.China is actively involved in key Bolivian economic sectors, including energy, mining, production infrastructure, computers, satellites, helicopters, drills and airplanes, he said.
