November 28, 2013 -- Just before the curtain comes down on this year's Shanghai International Film Festival, a host of movies currently in-production are showing off their best features in the hope of drumming up excitement and support for their eventual release.

Local studios, big production companies and even Hollywood, all are rushing to the event to ensure their share of prospective box office takings.

Hotly anticipated is the star-studded 3-D Chinese film The Monkey King. A daring adaptation of the classic novel "Journey to the West", the film is expected to attract young viewers with its thrilling action and compelling visual effects, bringing to life the war between the Chinese gods and the rebellious monkey king. Staring Chow Yun Fat, Donnie Yen and Aaron Kwok, the film will hit Chinese cinemas in December.

In contrast to this modern adaptation, Pop artist Jay Chows second work as a film director, "The Rooftop," will appeal to film-goers with its nostalgic settings. The dazzling musical drama tells a sincere and moving story of young people chasing their dreams in the 1970s, and is expected to attract thousands of Chows fans in July.

And the Transformers have also appeared at the event. The next instalment in the franchise, Transformers 4, is a Sino-US co-production and part of the film will be shot in Beijing and Shanghai. Audiences can look forward to seeing Beijings steel structured landmark "The Birds Nest" paired up with the iron Autobots. Chinese actress Li Bingbing will also star in the sequel.

And some studios have made even bolder moves in promoting their offering. This giant 24 meter long pencil lying outside the festivals main venue intrigues passers-by. The over-sized writing implement is promoting the movie "Bunshinsaba", which will be released in July.

Altogether, over 30 new productions have been presented at this years festival, competing for their share in the Chinese and international markets.
