Lessons of war must not be forgotten: conference

Reviewing and summarizing the lessons of the two disastrous world wars is very important for forging good state-to-state relations, safeguarding world peace and accelerating progress for all human beings, experts said. The remarks were made Saturday in Beijing at an international conference on "World War I and World War II in Retrospect: Lessons and Inspirations" that commemorated the centenary of the outbreak of WWI and the 75th anniversary of the start of WWII. More than 200 Chinese scholars and 20 foreign experts from 10 countries participated in the one-day symposium hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Academy of Military Sciences, the People's Liberation Army and supported by the State Council Information Office.Experts agreed that imperialism was the main cause of the two world wars, which were immensely destructive to human history. Apart from the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp and Nanjing Massacre, the fascists committed numerous unforgivable crimes that have often been ignored. The conference said that the international community should keep highly vigilant against militarism."War should never be an option in the relationship among nations - fire should not be used to put out fire. Even if war is an option it is an expensive one which has a debilitating effect not only for the vanquished for the victor," Professor Sylvanus Nicholas Spencer, from the University of Sierra Leone, said.
