China, Burundi vow to promote friendly cooperation






Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Saturday in Beijing, vowing to jointly promote bilateral friendly cooperation.Nkurunziza is visiting China to attend the opening ceremony of the second Summer Youth Olympic Games on Saturday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Xi commended the smooth development of bilateral relations, saying the two sides have maintained mutual understanding and support on issues related to each other's core interests and major concerns.China is ready to work with Burundi to push forward a model of mutually beneficial cooperation and common development between China and African nations, said Xi.China will strengthen cooperation with Burundi in accordance with its needs in agriculture, livestock, hydropower, and infrastructure to help the country develop its economy, increase employment, improve people's livelihood, enhance grain security and train qualified personnel, he said.He also called on the two sides to encourage people-to-people exchanges and expand cooperation in culture, health, technology, sports and education."China supports Burundi to play a positive role in safeguarding peace and security in Africa," said the president.Nkurunziza thanked China for its long-term assistance to his country in economic and social development.He said Burundi will continue to firmly support China's principles and stance on safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.Burundi is committed to strengthening peace and speeding up development after a lengthy civil war, he said, adding that the country hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in energy, mining, infrastructure, education and technology.Nkurunziza said Burundi welcomes more investment from China.Burundi has taken part in peace-keeping operations in Africa and hopes to cooperate with China in this area, he added.Nkurunziza also conveyed condolences to China for the Ludian earthquake that hit southwest China's Yunnan Province earlier this month.A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Ludian County in Yunnan Province on August 3. It has killed more than 600 people and destroyed 80,000 homes in Ludian County and surrounding areas.Xi briefed Nkurunziza on the post-quake reconstruction process, saying people in the ravaged areas are confident in rebuilding their homes at an early date.The Youth Olympic Games, the brainchild of former International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, are for young athletes aged between 15 and 18.
