A 62-year-old Beijing citizen, who was detained for posting false information on a foreign website that "misled the public and seriously harmed the country's image," was released on bail, Beijing police announced in a statement on Tuesday. Xiang Nanfu has been released because he was sick and posed no danger to society, according to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau's statement. It added that Xiang had confessed to his crimes and apologized. Xiang was put under criminal detention for allegedly "provoking troubles" on May 13. Since 2009, he had published numerous false stories on the US-based Chinese website "Boxun" (boxun.com) under the nickname "Feixiang," which means "fly" in Chinese, according to the police statement. His articles claimed that the "Chinese government removed organs from living people and buried people alive, triggering mass protests outside organizations of the UN in China," and "Over 1,000 policemen violently expropriated land and a pregnant woman was beaten to death in the dispute."Upon his arrest, Beijing police said that these fabricated stories has damaged China's image and caused negative impact as they were frequently forwarded by many foreign media.Legal experts have said that his detention reflected a campaign targeting the "whole network," which is "without national boundaries." Xiang was one of the high-profile rumormongers arrested in a nationwide crackdown on online rumors that has continued since August 2013. A number of Internet celebrities have been arrested over the last year, including Charles Xue, also known as Xue Manzi, whose Weibo account has more than 11 million followers.
