S.Korea levies punitive fines on mobile operators for illegal subsidy

South Korea's communications watchdog on Thursday found local mobile operators guilty of offering illegal subsidy, levying punitive fines again after doling out the biggest-ever penalty last year.Fines totaling 58.4 billion won ($57 million) were imposed on the three wireless carriers, including SK Telecom, LG Uplus and KT, according to the Korea Communications Commission.SK Telecom, the country's top mobile operator, drew the heaviest penalty at 37.1 billion won, followed by KT with 10.76 billion won and LG Uplus with 10.55 billion won.SK Telecom and LG Uplus caused more fines than under a standard regulation as the watchdog applied additional weighting to their penalties for leading the overheated rivalry. The two firms will be banned from doing business for a week each starting from later this month. The three mobile operators suffered the biggest-ever penalty at 106.4 billion won in December last year as they offered illegal subsidy to mobile phone buyers by offsetting the losses with higher mobile phone charges.
