Autolib

Cities around the world are working hard to reduce congested roads and clean up the polluted environment. London has been one of the worst offenders in Europe and they are currently working on a new procedure which will ensure cleaner air for future generations. Traffic issues are a problem in most European cities and they have all tried to handle them in different ways. The congestion charge in London has alleviated some problems but there is still a long way to go. Perhaps we should take a lead from Paris!

Paris is introducing a Cheap Citroen Thetford car sharing scheme called Autolib, the idea has been drawn from a similar scheme used for push bikes. The scheme is designed to encourage people to think about cars differently, encouraging them to ?hire? a car rather than own a car. The system is not a competitor to conventional car hire companies and Autolib encourages short journeys.

The car being used for the scheme is called the Blue Car and three thousand will be available to begin with. The vehicle is described as a bubble car. It is an automatic, electric car and can seat four people. Users will be able to pick from daily, monthly and annual tariffs, ranging from 10 euros up to 144 euros, depending on the length of time the car is used.

Is this a possibility for London? I suppose so but maybe we should let the French try it out first! The Autolib scheme will be fully ready in December 2011.
