In 2009 the Vauxhall Insignia was declared as the European Car of the Year, the award is judged by an international judging panel comprising of 59 motoring journalists from 23 countries. The Insignia was launched in 2008 to replace the ageing Vectra. The Vauxhall badged Insignia is built in Germany and sold in Europe under the Opel Badge, it is only in the UK that it is sold as a Vauxhall. The smallest petrol is a 1.4 Turbo with 138 bhp, followed by a 1.6 litre with 114 or 177 bhp. There are three 2.0 litre diesel options with either 217 or 247 bhp, the 2.8 litre engine is the largest and comes with 256 or 321 bhp. The diesel range consists of one engine available in 6 guises with power ranging from 109 to 158 bhp. The Insignia is also available as a high performance model, badged as the VXR. The Insignia VXR comes with a staggering 325 bhp and can do 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds thanks to its 4 wheel drive setup. In 2009 Vauxhall released the Insignia ecoFlex, which boasts excellent fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. Based on the 2.0 CDTi model the ecoFLEX employs new technology to improve fuel consumption to 54.7 mpg. Reduced CO2 emissions also mean lower road tax, but this does not mean a reduction in performance. The Vauxhall Insignia ecoFLEX can still do 0-60 mph in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 mph.
