Beetle Reincarnation

Volkswagen decided to re-introduce the Beetle in 1997; the new Beetle is based on the VW Golf and unlike the old Beetle it has the engine at the front. On its launch the VW Beetle was available as a 2 door hatchback and a convertible, much like the classic Beetle. The general look and design of the new Beetle is very similar to the iconic classic Beetle.

Some say the VW Beetle initiated the retro-futurist design trend, the fact that it was a modernised version of a legendary car, it hit a chord with many people looking to buy a non conservative car. The first generation Beetle was available with 4 petrol engines and 1 diesel model. The petrol engine range consists of a 1.4 litre, a 1.6 litre, a 2.0 litre and a turbo charged 1.8 litre with 74 bhp, 101 bhp, 114 bhp and 180 bhp respectively. The single available diesel is a 1.9 litre turbo diesel with 100 bhp, with plenty of torque and grunt.

As of July this year VW has begun the production of the 2nd generation Beetle, it will be built in Puebla, Mexico. The production was celebrated in style, dignitaries were in attendance to celebrate, officials included; Dr. Guido Westerwelle, the Federal Foreign Minister, Felipe Calderon, the Mexican President, and Hubert Waltl, Board Member for Production and Logistics at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand.

The 2nd generation Beetle has a lot to live up to, the classic Beetle sold over five million units. The 1st generation Beetle sold 1.5 million units. The new Beetle is due at new VW Beetle Middlesex dealerships during the early part of next year.
