What Car? Green Car Of The Year

What Car? Green Car Of The Year

This week saw the publication of the What Car? awards, in the Green Car category the Vauxhall Ampera was awarded the top prize and was named the ?Green Car of 2011?. The Vauxhall Ampera is not yet available to buy; it is due to go on sale in the 2nd quarter of 2012. It is not unusual for a car to win awards before it is officially launched, but the Ampera is definitely causing a stir in the automotive world.

The Ampera is produced by General Motors and sold under the Vauxhall brand in the UK; fundamentally it is a Chevrolet Volt with some cosmetic changes. The Volt is the American version of the Ampera and will be on sale alongside it at London Vauxhall showrooms. In the USA the Volt has been on sale since last December and is recording great sales numbers.

The Vauxhall Voltec technology enables the Ampera to do 175 miles to the gallon and emit only 40g/km of CO2. The Ampera can travel 25-50 miles on battery power alone, meaning at this distance it will emit zero emissions. Due to its range extender the Ampera can do 310 miles without the need to re-charge the battery or replenish the fuel tank.

Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall?s Managing Director said, "The Ampera takes Vauxhall into a new era. It can genuinely be considered a car that can perform a full range of family duties, with its four-seats and five-door body. Yet its 100mph performance and brisk acceleration mean that it can hold its own in the cut and thrust of everyday motoring, unlike many EVs currently on sale."
