The Audi A8 has been in production since 1994 and is the German brand?s flagship model, it replaced the Audi V8. The A8 was the first mass produced car that had an all-aluminium chassis, marketed as the Audi Space Frame. The first generation model stayed in production for 8 years, it was available as a long wheel base model too. The Audi A8L adds an additional 5 inches to the rear legroom, making it ideal for use as a limo. The second generation was introduced in 2002; it was in production until 2009. The new model is longer than the previous generation, with room for four or five ?large? adult occupants in the cabin, depending on the rear seat layout combination. The newest Audi A8 in London is the third generation model that has been in production since 2009, it is based on the new Volkswagen Group MLB platform, but retains the Audi Space Frame aluminium construction of the previous A8. In the UK it is currently available with 3 engine choices, 2 diesels and 1 petrol. The single petrol unit is a 4.2 litre V8 with 366 bhp, the diesel V8 has 346 bhp, the smaller V6 powered diesel is a 3.0 litre with 247 bhp. One of the diesel engines has to be the more popular choice, the diesel V8 is as powerful as the V8 petrol ? makes no sense to get the petrol variant. Audi has recently confirmed production of the Hybrid Audi A8; it will go on sale here in the UK by the end of next year. It will use a parallel hybrid drive train with a modified 2.0 litre TFSI engine developing 350Nm of torque between 1500 and 4200rpm and 211PS, which will work alongside a disc-shaped electric motor generating 40kW/54PS and 210Nm. At speeds of up to 62mph, the Audi A8 hybrid can be driven purely on electric power with a 1.86 mile range at a speed of 37mph.
