A senior legislative official has highlighted that universal suffrage in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) must accord with its Basic Law and the decisions of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.Li Fei, deputy secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the 12th NPC , made the remarks on Friday at a symposium on Hong Kong's universal suffrage, noting that the HKSAR chief executive must be patriotic and love Hong Kong.More than 500 Hong Kongers from diverse walks of life attended the symposium, with many arguing that universal suffrage in accordance with laws is an important implementation of the principal of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law, and that these are conducive to the region's long-term prosperity.Li said that Hong Kong citizens should unite patriotically to oppose any action jeopardizing prosperity including the Occupy Central movement, and called for all-out efforts to achieve the goal of universal suffrage in 2017.Under the Basic Law, candidates for the city's chief executive must be nominated by a "broadly representative" nominating committee, Li noted.Chan Yung, chairman of the New Territories Association of Societies, claimed that there is no international standard for universal suffrage and only the Basic Law counts.Good universal suffrage is "one person, one vote," Chan said. Also on Friday, Zhou Bo, deputy head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said that China's central government is resolute and sincere about realizing universal suffrage in 2017.Zhou said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that universal suffrage in the election of a chief executive and the Legislative Council is a goal set out in the Basic Law of the HKSAR.The central government's basic policy toward the special administrative region will not change, he said.
