Hybrid Cars On The Market

The cost of motoring has been reported to be of growing concern to a great number of drivers, given the economic situation that many people are facing both within the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. With many drivers looking to reduce the costs associated with motoring, more people are paying attention to the growing number of hybrid cars available on the market, from manufacturers such as Lexus, Honda, and Toyota. The reason for this is that hybrid cars use a combination of petrol engine power and electric battery power, which reduces petrol consumption and therefore makes motoring cheaper.

Environment and Tax Issues

A driver considering buying a hybrid car must think about the associated economic and environmental issues as these two factors are closely interlinked to issues concerning taxation. Among the economic issues is the saving that drivers can make in terms of petrol costs if they change from a purely petrol powered engine to the combination petrol and electric battery power that these hybrid cars offer. There are different varieties of hybrid cars in the same way that there are different varieties of petrol or diesel powered cars, but the general view is that hybrid cars should be as fuel efficient, or more fuel efficient, than diesel cars. The combination of a diesel engine and an electric motor is unlikely in a car however, and this is due to the production costs that would be involved.

Aligned to the amount of petrol that an engine consumes, and therefore the price that a motorist pays at the petrol pump, is the quantity of emissions that can be expected from a car. The emissions also have an economic effect, as sufficiently low emissions can mean that a car may be exempt from certain taxes or even the central London congestion charge. Some hybrid cars achieve this low rate of emissions, making the car even more economical for the driver above and beyond the amount of money paid for petrol.

The lower taxes are related to environmental issues because the extra tax is levied based on the load that emissions place of the environment. A cleaner car is a car with lower emission rates, and hybrid cars tend to perform better than purely petrol or diesel powered cars in this respect. It is, however, the lower costs in financial terms that are frequently cited in reviews as the main benefits of hybrid cars.
