PTI Engineered Plastics Inc. is extending its capabilities with the addition of its largest press, a Maruka 660-ton machine, and is also developing a dedicated cell to handle high heat materials.

"The 660 will allow us to be able to handle more work than we've been able to in the past," said John Budreau, Director of New Business Development at PTI, during a telephone interview.

He said that the Macomb, Mich-based company's largest machine had been 500 tons, but they were finding in certain medical housing and automotive applications that they needed more clamping force. A Maruka FCS machine with a servo driven hydraulic pump system was brought on line in January to produce its first parts.

The addition means that PTI now has 42 presses ranging from 12 tons to 660 tons at it 155,000 square foot facility. The company completed a 36,000 square foot addition in May, 2012.

Budreau said that the expansion enabled it to move its value added services, including pad printing into a new area, and has freed up space for more changes.

"We will be taking delivery soon on two machines for high heat materials and they will be outfitted to create a high heat business unit," he said.

Two Toyo machines, 90 tons and smaller, will be part of that closed environment high-heat area that Budreau said should be operational by March 1. He said that it will be particularly helpful for its medical customers, but could be used for any industry using high heat materials.

The company stresses its ability to design and make the molds, provide prototyping, manufacture the product and handle multi-component assembly. PTI also does micro molding.
